Al Shabaab fighters have fired at least eight mortar rounds at a large military belonging to the African Union mission in Somalia known as (AMISOM) in Lower Shabelle region on Wednesday night, Idale News Online Reports.
According to sources, the Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab attacked the AMISOM’s outpost in Leego with mortar shelling, before engaging heavy gunfight with the Burundian peacekeepers stationed at the area.
In the aftermath of the mortar bombardment, Burundian peacekeepers of AMISOM contingent have responded to the barrage with heavy artillery shelling on nearby Al Shabaab bases outside Leego.
Al shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack on AMISOM base in Leego area, saying it inflicted casualties on the African Union soldiers, though the number remained vague.
