A Heavy fighting broke out in Gofgadud area near the southern strategic town of Baidoa on Wednesday after South West state forces backed by AMISOM attacked militant positions. Idale News Online, Reports.
Residents in the village said they heard explosions and gunfire as African Union and South West state troops made a push toward positions held by al-Shabaab militants.
Following a deadly battle that left several soldiers and militants dead, the allied forces have successfully regained full control of Gofgadud area located about 30Km north of Baidoa town.
Ethiopian troops on AMISOM contingent have helped South West state retake Gofgadud in Baay region of southern Somalia from Al shabaab, according to the local residents.
Over the past few weeks, Al Shabaab has been making substantial advances in some parts of the country, seizing several key towns vacated by Somali forces and Ethiopian troops.
