AU peacekeepers arrested in Mogadishu for selling military supply

Police in Somalia say they arrested five African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu on Sunday, while selling military supplies in black market, reports said.

AMISOM said in a Twitter post that they had been made aware of allegations on Social Media against some of its soldiers claimed to have been arrested selling army equipment.

“We are in touch with the Somali Police Force to establish the veracity of these claims,” said AMISOM in the statement posted in its officials Twitter account on Sunday.

During the police operation, at least ten civilians were arrested for helping the five AMISOM soldiers in the transaction of the military equipment in Mogadishu market.

The arrest of the AMISOM soldiers took place at a garage near Benadir junction in Mogadishu’s Hodon district, according to witnesses who spoke to Radio Shabelle.

Somali police chief Gen Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud told reporters in the scene, that the AMISOM soldiers  have been under surveillance and lastly were captured in the criminal action.

The detained AMISOM soldiers were selling Fuel, ammunition, cell-phones, defensive sacks and other military supplies at the time of their arrest, according to the police boss.
