The Baidoa Regional Hospital is a neutral and impartial health facility providing medical and surgical services based on needs and without discrimination.
BACKGROUND
The surgeon contributes to the management of surgical services in the hospital, including planning, scheduling and coordination, determination of procedures, and supervision / management of surgical supplies and equipment. The surgeon provides consultation and surgical assistance to other physicians and surgeons. H/She reports directly to the medical coordinator and works closely with the hospital medical coordinator and colleagues

Purpose of the position: Facilitation and management of surgical services in Bay regional hospital.
The position is full time.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
1. Has an adequate experience of carrying out emergency surgery and skills of dealing with major surgical cases while he can effectively perform on Laparotomy, vascular damage repair and basic orthopedic procedures for trauma care.
2. Pre-operative and post-operative care should be carried out by the surgeon and properly prescribe antibiotics according to the hospital antibiotic protocols.
3. Take an active role in quality improvement activities in the OT and surgical wards in terms of infection control, medical waste management and staff health safety.
4. To provide immediate stabilization of the patients’ condition and asses need for surgical intervention in the emergency room, ICU or ward environment
5. Analyze patient’s medical history, medication allergies, physical condition, and examination results to verify operation’s necessity and to determine best procedure.
6. Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatments and procedures, such as medications, diet, tests and investigations.
7. During a daily ward round direct and coordinate surgical activities of nurses, assistants, and other paramedical staff (physio, x-ray, and lab).
8. Provide daily documented patient assessment to provide information to plan interventions on medical condition and surgical follow up.
9. Follow established surgical guidelines and techniques (ICRC).
10. To assist the head of OT in the management of supplies, rosters and maintaining effective OT plan updating on daily basis.
11. Refer patient to medical specialist or other practitioners when necessary.
12. Consider conducting research on surgical activities after discussion with relevant academic / ethical guidance
13. Ensure ongoing implementation and maintenance of hygiene and sterile guidelines in the OT As part of the surgical team, manage surgical services, including planning, scheduling and coordination, determination of procedures, and effective use of supplies and equipment.
14. Take part in a regular meeting convened by the Medical Director where patient case histories and the implemented care plans are reviewed.
15. Provide consultation and surgical assistance to other physicians and surgeons.
Minimum requirements:
1. The applicant should have at least university degree of MBBS
2. Master of general surgery is an advantage
3. The applicant should be apple to manage and treat diseases, injuries, deformities by invasive methods, such as manual manipulation or by using instruments and appliances.
4. The applicant should have a minimum of 2 years of surgical experience or more
5. The applicant should have the ability to make judgments and decision making ; considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one
6. War surgery experience is an added value.
