Amid fears of Al Shabaab attacks, Police in Mogadishu say they are fully prepared to  secure the coming parliamentary and presidential elections slated before the end of the year.

The newly appointed Mogadishu police chief Bishar Abshir Gedi, said the federal government of Somalia has readied special unity of police forces who are assigned to take security responsibility of the election.

Last week, Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appealed to AMISOM to help secure the upcoming elections, that would be turning point for Somalia in its steady progress to peace and stabilization.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamued urged security forces to be on alert, adding that Al-Shabaab may seek to disrupt the process and prevent voters from exercising their democratic rights in the election.

The president’s call came as Al Shabaab stepping up its attacks in Mogadishu, targeting AMISOM base, hotels and government installations in the war-torn seaside capital of the horn of Africa.
