Resident: AMISOM Fires Mortar Rounds on Marka

The Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces have been accused of firing rounds of mortars on residential areas in the southern port city of Marka, 100Km south of Mogadishu.

A resident who did not want to be named, told local media by phone that he could heard loud explosions on Thursday night as parts of the city were hit by AMISOM mortar shelling.

Marka which serves as the regional capital of Lower Shabelle fell to Somali and AMISOM troops in 2012 was hit by Al Shabaab attacks and clan clashes over the past two years.

AMISOM has a major military base outside the city, and some sometimes the AU soldiers carry out security patrols in the town, to make sure the peace and stability.
