Somali forces backed by African Union peacekeepers have dislodged Al Shabaab militants from key port town in southern Somalia on Sunday morning, residents said.

The dawn military operations saw Al-Shabaab militants being driven out from the strategic port town of Marka, 110Km south west of Mogadishu.

Soldiers from Somalia national army and the African Union forces and tanks rolled into the coastal city, without encountering Al Shabaab resistance.

The port town of Marka which was first liberated from Al-Shabaab in 2012, has been in chaos and turmoil over the past few years as the city’s control changes in hands.

More details to come.
