Somalia celebrates its 56th Independence – 1st July

Somalia is celebrating its 56th Independence day, marking the end of colonization and the reunification of regions that were separately being ruled by Italy and Britain.

Hundreds of Somalis wearing dress designed in Somali flag have gathered on Wednesday in central Mogadishu to commemorates the the 56th anniversary of the Independence Day.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who briefly appeared at the event which coincided with the holy of Ramadan, congratulated Somali people for being strong despite challenges.

“I congratulate the Somali people because of this great day, and it’s one of the most significant moments in Somalia’s history, ” Mohamud told participants.

The Southern regions of Somalia got its independence from Italian colonialism on July 1, 1960 and united with the northern regions which gained independence from British colony in June 26, 1960.
