Somali PM announces run for president

The outgoing Somali prime minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke has on Monday announced he will run for president in the upcoming presidential election expected to take place in October 30, 2016.

The premier made his announcement at his office in Villa Somalia, with the presence of media workers.

“I decided to announce today my candidacy for Somalia president and participate in the coming election, if elected, I will revive the country’s  economy and establish strong army to restore peace,” he said.

Having served two terms as prime minister, Mr. Sharmarke said that he can lead Somali to a more stable and prosperous period, drawing his experience drawn from years he spent in the politics.

Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is also running for second term in office, and has already declared his candidacy for president.
