The president of the northeastern semi-autonomous state of Puntland Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas has confirmed his administration inked peace deal with Galmudug to end Galkayo conflict.
Speaking at press conference in Bosaso after having a meeting with UN envoy, Puntland leader said he spoke to his Galmudug counterpart over the phone, and discussed on the cessation of the violence.
“I reached out Guled and PM Shamarake on the phone and talked with them over the Galkayo conflict and ways to end the bloodshed,” said Gaas during the press conference in Bosaso city on Monday.
UN’s special envoy for Somalia Micheal Keating and a delegation he was leading reached Bosaso town on Monday, and held talks with Puntland leader Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas and other officials.
Galmudug and Puntland forces clashed Sunday in Galkacyo, the deadliest battle in years which claimed lives of over 30 people dead, while many families fled their houses.
The Sunday’s fighting erupted a week after the presidents of Galmudug and Puntland signed UAE-brokered ceasefire deal in Abu Dhabi.
