This followed security threats by Alshabaab that they will attack shopping malls in the western world. Even though Djibouti is not is the western world, it borders Somalia which is the main base of Alshabaab. However, President Gelleh brushed around the threats of Alshabaab citing them as an illusion.

He added that Alshabaab are now on its death bed hence need no propagation to support it as they want it. President Gelleh said so while giving an interview to a US Government broadcasting station.

Last year two Alshabaab suspects carried out a suicide attack at a restaurant in Djibouti.
