Mogadisho(INO)-In today’s session, the parliament is due to act in solidarity with the Somali Money Transfer Companies which face a stiff time as banks in the US threaten to shut down their accounts.

One of the members of the federal parliament, Mohamed Omar told the state broadcasting radio station about the agenda of today’s parliamentary session.

“Among the agendas of today is one on the reading of a support for the Somali Money Transfer Companies”. He said.

A few days ago, the Somali Prime Minister, Omar Abdirashid called for the US banks to withdraw their decision of closing the accounts of the Somali Money Transfers.

The premier said the lives of most Somalis depend on remittances transferred through the Somali Money Transfer Companies. “The remittances from Somalis in the Diaspora through the Somali Money Transfer Companies facilitated by the US banks is used to support children who lead a struggling livelihood”. The premier said. “Most of the Somalis relay on remittances through the Money Transfer Companies”. The Prime Minister added.

The prime minister said the Somali government is aware of the concerns of the US banks that illegal movements may use the remittance services, but despite this the decision of the banks to close the accounts of the Somali money transfer companies can lead to devastating humanitarian problem in Somalia.

“The decision the US banks are using to close the accounts of the Somali money transfer companies should be reviewed. I said this because this decision harms the entire Somalia, without me using any scapegoat”. The primer said.

60% of the Somali livelihood depends on the remittances from abroad by the Somali Diaspora community members.
