Deadly fighting has flared up between Al Shabaab fighters and Somali government troops at several locations near the southern coastal city of Marka, the regional capital of Lower Shabelle.
Sunday’s battle took place at El Ahmed and El Addow areas located in the outskirts of Marka, when Al Shabaab militants staged massive attack on Somali military has main bases, reports said.
On the other hand, the deputy commissioner of Marka Abdikarim Hussein Hassan, told Radio Shabelle over the phone that Somali troops repulsed the Al Shabaab attack and killed fighters.
He said two soldiers on their side have been wounded in the attack and taken to hospital.
Al Shabaab did not comment on the attack, but the town and its surrounding villages have been beset by attacks and clan battles which claimed the lives of the hundreds of people, mostly civilians.
