Dozen arrested in connection to the killing of Police commander

Government forces in Jowhar town have arrested scores of Al Shabaab suspects in connection to the killing of Police chief on Saturday, Idale News Online reports.

A senior official in Jowhar said suspects were captured during a security sweep in areas believed to be hideouts for Al Shabaab fighters around Jowhar, located 90 km north of the capital Mogadishu.

He said the detained Al Shabaab suspects are currently under custody amid ongoing interrogation for the recent assassination of a top Police commissioner.

Middle Shabelle regional Police commander Colonel Khalif Abdulle Arfaye was killed by a grenade bomb explosion at Police headquarters in Jowhar town on Saturday night.

Al Shabaab has claimed the murder of the Police officer, and vowed to step up similar attacks against army bases and security officials in the southern region.

The Al Qaeda-linked terror group has been defeated militarily, and driven out of the Somali capital Mogadishu and other key areas in the country by Somali National Army backed by African Union peacekeeping forces (AMISOM) since 2011.
